A Note About Sinamay

Sinamay is a hand woven fabric derived from the fibers of the Abaca plant.  Also known as “manila hemp”, Abaca belongs to the banana family.  It is indigenous to the Philippines but is also grown in Borneo and Sumatra where the warm, wet climate and volcanic soils are best suited to its cultivation.

Some of the qualities of Abaca fibers that make it desirable are its sustainability, strength and durability, relatively low production cost, lovely texture and the fact that it is biodegradable and earth friendly.
